In this video Connor Powers shows a hitting drill for youth baseball players that will show them exactly what they need to be doing if they are having any issues “staying back” during their swing. This will work for youth baseball players all the way up to high school and college baseball players by staying through the baseball.

Bat Wraps are one of the most common mechanical flaws in developing players because it feels strong to their swing, but all the bat wrap is doing is creating an inefficient, slower, less powerful swing which will result in less consistent hitting.

In this video Connor gives away one quick tip to solve the bat wrap problem. This is a simple trick that will work instantly for players at every single age group.

This tip can be practiced in the mirror or with a parent or coach checking the position of the barrel of the bat.

uhmmm…….not quite sure what to say since there are lots of half-true
comments here. take a look at chris oleary’s web site. he is a pro-level
consultant and has dozens of stop-action videos on current and past
hitters. he studies what MLB players ACTUALLY do by analyzing their swings
FRAME-BY-FRAME. you will see that virtually no MLB players move forward
during their swing. stride or no stride, the MLB player’s head stays
virtually still. the power hitters are able to load (stride or no stride)
and put a violent swing on the ball by “throwing their body” up against a
firm front side (which is essentially a straight line from their front heel
to their head). sometimes the back leg/foot comes off the ground, but NOT
because they are moving forward. take a look at the frame-by-frame videos
of real hitters hitting real pitches and you will see what mechanics work
at the major league level.

Every big league hitter moves forward when they swing… The term “stay
back” means stay behind your front foot.. it does NOT mean stay on your
back leg… Harper, pujols, cabrerra and cano all have their back foot come
off the ground when they swing… (and they aren’t the only ones, although
most guys drag their back foot, showing that their weight is not back)

yes, because they stay BEHIND their front foot…
Leaking over your front foot is not a moving forward problem.. it’s a
timing problem… if you start your swing too early, you will leak over
your front foot.. if you start it on time, you won’t.

I think this is a little misleading. When you talk about staying back or
behind the baseball, it only works in this instance with a no stride
approach. Most of the time when someone refers to staying back, they really
mean starting back. In reality, if a player strides, of course his head is
going to move. Look at any of the great hitters of today and yesterday, and
you will see big time head movement forward. That is their weight shift.
The key is to stop head movement at front heel plant, or once the front
foot lands and the heel plants on the ground, for the player that takes a
stride. Front heel plant is when the swing begins…not when you take your
stride. Stride or no stride, once the front heel plants the head stops
moving and the body rotates under the head or as some say, the body rotates
around the head or a center axis…for all the “rotational” hitters out
there. If you are “linear”, keep moving forward through the ball with
everything.

Hey i have some questions. I am 13 and am having trouble letting the
outside pitch, or any pitch for that matter, travel and get deeper in the
hitting zone. I really have a problem with this on off speed stuff. Ive
tried bringing my feet closer together, a huge leg kick, a toe tap and much
more but i just cant find any answers from anyone that work for me . I have
great bat speed but im 0 for 9 on the season. Any tips or drills.

Also you can place something that goes up to about hip height a couple
inches in front of their front foot and have them swing so their hips don’t
“slide” just a suggestion

Good Stuff – enjoy your videos. I coach an 11U team in Virginia. We
grabbed the Nations Select #1 ranking in the State to complete our fall
season. Our team logo is to the left. Question for ya – working hard with
my son on T work/soft toss/front toss on learning how to let the outside
pitch get deeper into the zone; driving the ball to the opposite field.
How deep do you typically instruct kids to let the ball travel before
pulling the trigger?
