Young people have been hardest hit by the economic crisis as they often lack the experience and skills to be competitive. Today one in five young Europeans cannot find a job. To emphasise the value of young people in the workforce, the Youth@Work action aims to show that thanks to their fresh take on the world, young people often have innovative ideas and energy. In Belgium, 50% of the population has a favourable opinion of entrepreneurs but the entrepreneurship rate is still below 10%. Diane Mbarushimana, 27, took the risk and is establishing a company called Guheka to make products for parents and young children, such as baby carriers. As she didn’t feel confident enough to become self-employed, she first turned to an association which helps her to concentrate on her start-up without having to reach a certain level of turnover each month. Then she applied for a micro-loan, through microStart. Nowadays she’s really happy to be her own boss.
